Reinhardt knew that war left behind a plethora of things. Broken hearts, vengeful souls...but he never once considered the possibility of orphans. More specifically, orphans filled with determination. Not to seek revenge or justice, but make a difference.

Sitting there, ragged and in desperate need of food and a bath, leaning against the side of the ship. He’d only stepped out to help Ana make sure everything was ready to go. She took the far side, and he the closest. But as he turned the side, he found something incredibly strange.

A young woman, hardly older than sixteen, curled up beside the ship. He was surprised.

‘A child?’ His brow furrowed, staring at you from within his armor. ‘Where did she come from?’ You didn’t stir. You...you weren’t dead, were you?

“Fraulein?” He spoke up, reaching out. His giant hand barely touched your face before you suddenly snapped up. Your eyes flew wide open, gasping in shock. You scrambled away from him, tumbling into the back of the jet. Reinhardt quickly withdrew.

“What the Hell are you supposed to be?!” Your shriek was hoarse and tired. Reinhardt held his hands up in surrender, activating his com.

“Do not be scared, madam. I am not going to hurt you.” He tried to assure you, just as Ana’s voice came over.

“Reinhardt? Did you find a problem?”

“N-no, not exactly...but I could use some help.” He mumbled, watching as you struggled up.

“Are you...are you one of them?” You asked him, “Y-you stopped the bad guys?”

“Yes.” He said proudly, carefully removing his helmet. “You’re safe, see? I will not hurt you.”

“My family’s dead. Because of them.” Your hand was littered in bloody injuries, pointing shakily out into the demolished world. Reinhardt’s face fell. “A-all my friends. Everything I ever knew...j-just gone.”

“I am...I am very sorry, fraulein. We could not save them, but-”

“-Next time, I will.”

Reinhardt froze. “...What?”

“I’m gonna save them next time. I’m gonna help.” You repeated, louder this time. On trembling legs, you pushed up, pressing your weight to the ship in an attempt to hold yourself up. “I’m gonna fight.”

“You are going to calm down, is what you’re going to do.” He found himself, hurrying forward. He caught your arm, holding you up just as your legs gave out. “You are exhausted- how did you even find us, here?”

“I wanted to fight. You guys know how. I found you, so you could teach me.” You told him, staring up at him with conviction. You’re going to help me, aren’t you?”

“I can’t just-”

“You’re going to.” You interrupted him, grasping his arm so tight, he could almost feel it through his armor. “You have to. I don’t have anything else to-”

You were suddenly cut off when a tranquilizer pierced your skin. Reinhardt stopped your body from collapsing, hoisting you into his arms. You were completely unconscious.

With a sigh, Reinhardt looked up, into the bushes several meters away. “Was that really necessary?”

“You did not exactly clarify if she was a threat or not. What was I supposed to think?”

“She needs medical attention. Alert Dr. Ziegler that we are coming. This girl needs help.” He stated bluntly, starting for the ship again. Ana appeared from the bushes, starting after him and trailing deftly alongside him.

“And what of her request? That girl wants to become a member of Overwatch, doesn’t she?” Ana reminded him, pushing the rifle back on her shoulder. “Are you going to let her?”

“That is not up to me to decide.” He replied. “She is just a girl, who’s been through so much, already. The last thing I want is for someone so young to get caught up in fighting.”

“You think she’ll agree when she comes to?”

“Of course not.” He sighed, looking down at you. Your face was contorted, almost painfully in your unconsciousness. “But I do not think she is the type to back down. She reminds me a bit of you.”

“Of course she does.” Ana scoffed. “And you remind me of a silly old goat.”

When your eyes opened again, it was against white light. A light that, once settled, revealed several faces surrounding your bed. The giant old man, one with a red, white and blue jacket and the teenager with the pink MEKA. Aside from them, an old woman and a blonde doctor.

“Careful. She is coming to.” You heard her say in a muffled voice, ears still ringing from whatever had knocked you out. You blinked rapidly, trying to get your eyes to focus. “(Name)...can you hear me?”

“...You...you know my n-name?” You croaked, throat on fire. The woman nodded, glancing at a tablet in her hand.

“I ran a DNA test- you’re seventeen years old, blood type AB, birthdate-”

“None of that matters. Am I okay, now?” You cut her off, looking around. “You guys...you’re all Overwatch members, aren’t you? You were fighting out there, in my city.”

“And we’re sending you back the second Ziegler gives you the go-ahead.” The jacket-wearing man said gruffly. “Wilhelm told us about how you were bleeding out, spouting nonsense about joining. You’re not even old enough to legally-”

“I’m joining.” You growled, speaking with conviction. “It’s not like I’d sign any consent forms, even if my age mattered. My family’s dead because of those Talon freaks. You think I’m gonna stand by and get told I can’t do anything because I’m ‘too young’?”

“...I think it would be a good idea for her to join.” Reinhardt spoke up when the others fell silent. They stared at him like he was crazy, instantly sparking conversation all over again.

“She’s a minor! She won’t know the first thing about anything-”

“If she gets hurt it’s on our hands, and we’re screwed! What if the UN found out about-”

“It’s too dangerous, she’s still a kid, we’re-”

“She’ll be fine!!” Reinhardt insisted, shouting over their endless voices. “Mein gott, you’re all so spineless. We were hardly older than her when we first joined, weren’t we? Besides, it won’t be long before she comes of age, right?”

“Right!” You piped up quickly, earning mixed responses.

“See? This will give us a rare advantage to train someone and prepare her before everyone else! She’ll have a head start on everything she’ll need to know. I think it would be good for her.”

“Don’t be foolish, Reinhardt. We cannot simply take the girl away.” Ana dismissed him.

“She has nowhere else to go.” Reinhardt pointed out. “Her home is destroyed, Ana. You really want to abandon a defenseless child here, when we could teach her how to fight and live in a safe place?”

“It’s just too risky.” Jack said seriously, arms folded over his chest. “We can’t take her in just like that, Wilhelm. I know you’re worried about this kid, but what about the rest of us? The repercussions for doing something out of line like this are harsh. Overwatch is already on thin ice. You don’t really want to make things worse, do you?”

“Don’t worry about repercussions. I’ll take full responsibility for the girl!” Reinhardt declared. Everyone stared.

“What?!”

“I can take care of her, train her and everything! She’ll be a pupil under my jurisdiction. If anything bad comes of it, all of it will fall on my shoulders, and no one else’s! We could try that, couldn’t we?”

Jack spared a glance at Ana, who shrugged her shoulders. He then looked to Dr. Ziegler, and Hana, finally landing on you. There was a strangely hopeful glint in all of their eyes, making him feel the inevitable defeat. This plan of his could actually work. Whether or not that was okay, Jack wasn’t sure.

Of course, there was only one way to truly find out.

“And you. You’d be okay with something like that? Working with him, until you’re old enough to become a fully-fledged member?”

You looked up at the giant, friendly old man, who offered you a lopsided grin and a thumbs-up. You smiled shyly, “I wouldn’t mind it at all.”

“In that case...I suppose there’s nothing else to say. Wilhelm,” Jack looked to him as he rose, clapping a hand on his shoulder, “I’m leaving this kid to you. Don’t break her.”

“Sir, yes sir!” Reinhardt grinned broadly, before turning to you with sparkling eyes. “What do you know!! You’ll be a member of Overwatch after all!!”

“Welcome to the team, (Name).” Hana giggled, “It’s nice to finally have another girl I can talk to!”

“I can’t believe it.” You breathed, feeling your heart pound with excitement. “I can really do it? I’m really going to make a difference??”

“Indeed you are!!” Reinhardt cheered, wrapping an arm around your shoulders and nearly crushing you with his friendly strength. “And I’ll be there to guide you every step of the way, fraulein! We’ll be a team- nein, a family!”

“That would be fantastic.” You said breathlessly, surrounded by your newfound friends.

Friends who ended up trying to free you from Reinhardt’s grasp when he enveloped you in a massive bearhug...that nearly crushed your limbs.

At least you had someone who was just as happy to be there as you were.
